Summer Reading Part 3: The Book Thief

Hooking Readers

Passage:
"Do you feel bad?" Liesel finally asked. They were already on the way home. "About what?" "You know." "Of course I do, but I'm not hungry anymore, and I bet he's not hungry, either. Don't think for a second that the priests would get food if there wasn't enough to go around at home." "He just hit the ground so hard." "Don't remind me." But Rudy Steiner couldn't resist smiling. In years to come, he would be a giver of bread, not a stealer-proof again of the contradictory human being. So much good, so much evil. Just add water.
Five days after their bittersweet little victory, Aruthur Berg emerged again and invited them on his next stealing project. They ran into him on Munich Street, on the way home from school on Wednesday. He was already in his Hitler Youth uniform. "We're going again tomorrow afternoon. You interested?" They couldn't help themselves. "Where?" "The potato place."
Twenty-four hours later, Liesel and Rudy braved the wire fence again and filled their sack. The problem showed up as they made their getaway. "Christ!" shouted Arthur. "The farmer!" It was his next word, however, that frightened. He called it out as if he'd already been attacked with it. His mouth ripped open. The word flew out, and the word was ax. Sure enough, when they turned around, the farmer was running at them, the weapon aloft. The whole group ran for the fence line and made their way over. Rudy, who was farthest away, caught up quickly, but not quickly enough to avoid being last. As he pulled his leg up, he became entangled.
"Hey!" The sound of the stranded.
The group stopped.
Instinctively, Liesel ran back.
"Hurry up!" Arthur called out. His voice was far away, as if he'd swallowed it before it exited his mouth.

This short passage of The Book Thief is telling us about how Liesel and Rudy felt after stealing food from a young boy on a bike that they had made fall and get knocked out when he was delivering bread to the priest at a nearby church. The 2nd part of this passage explains how Liesel and Rudy went on a trip with Arthur and his friends to a small local farm to steal apples and potato's and anything that they could find, but instead of an easy get away then the farmer sees them and Rudy was the lucky one of the group this time.

Summer Reading Part 4: The Book Theif

The Book Thief, why I chose this book over all others??

Well, The main reason that I chose this book to read out of all on the list was because I have always had a deep interest in the holocaust and how people lived back in Nazi, Germany during the time of Adolf Hitler's rule, and once I learned what this book was about it got me interested how it told the story from a small German girl's point of view and how when the girl's mother goes missing she learns the truth and realizes the monster that Adolf Hitler truly is. I also like this book because not only is it based on the holocaust but it also has a really good story behind it describing where this girl, Liesel Meminger, came from and who she is and how she feels during the time of the war as well as before and after the war, WWII.

I would recommend this book to many people, believe it or not I already have when my friend's grandmother asked me about summer homework once I told her about it then she seemed interested in it since she just read a book similar to it called "The diary of Anna Frank" and said that she would have to give the Book Thief a try, but I'm not saying its only for older people I think that it's a good book to learn from and to touch a little deeper into the subject itself.

[sophomore year] [Summer Reading] The Book Theif: Part 1

For my summer reading book for the Printz award I chose to read The Book Thief.

Main Characters: Liesel Meminger, Hans Hubermann, Rudy Steiner

The Protagonist of this book, is a young poor girl named Liesel Meminger who lived with her mother and brother. But sadly, The mother could no longer afford to take care of her beloved kids so she put them on a train and rode with them to their new house, a foster home. After burring her brother Liesel finds something buried in the snow that one of the grave digger's left known as The grave digger's handbook once Liesel found the book she hid it away as the last connection to her mother, and her brother, but soon for Hans Hubermann to discover.

Other Main Characters: Hans Hubermann, Rudy Steiner
Hans Hubermann is a kind man that smells like "Tobacco and Kerosene" that lives with his wife Frau Hubermann and his 2 kids Hans Junior, Trudy and Liesel Meminger. He is known to be as Liesel's loving and caring foster father. He comforts her during the bad times with his accordion skills and cares for her doing the good, he teaches Liesel how to read, and write and even taught her how to roll cigarettes for money and read her books that she found when she couldn't.

Antagonist: Frau Hubermann (abuses and cures at Liesel and make her do her jobs) (like the step mom in Cinderella) Frau Hubermann is the "Iron fisted lady" known as Liesel's foster mother who is always yelling and punishing Liesel for sometimes the smallest of things, but other times major things including beating Liesel with wooden spoons until she can no longer get up or move.

Setting: The setting of this book takes place in early Nazi, Germany throughout the years of WW2 and the holocaust.

While Liesel was on the train with her family her brother suffered an asthma attack in the middle of the night and didn't have anything to stop it in the middle of winter and he died once his sister awoke, though she didn't want to believe that he was really gone so she tried to wake him up and when it didn't work then she woke her mother and together they got off the train and buried their dead when they had reached the nearest station. But now, as Liesel desperately suffers from homesickness and missing her brother she hopes to see her mother again and by sending unanswered letters.

Predictions: My predictions for this book are that Liesel's mother is most likely in a concentration camp because Liesel is a Jew and she doesn't know it, due to textual evidence about her mother.

Connections: This book does have a movie to go along with it that has recently released into the theaters called The Book Thief and is also somewhat similar to the city of thieves. And now I am wondering what Liesel will do to go and to go through to get to here mother and the challenges that she will face ahead. Just like in the City of Thieves when Lev and koyla have to go through a long and trying challenge to find eggs for their freedom.

Adolf Hitler: True Facts of his life

Adolf Hitler, most think of him as a disturbed man who brought the Jews their worst nightmare. But what if I told you that when he was little he was an average Germany boy until he was filled with unbearable anger.

Adolf when he was young many people didn't know that he actually had more then 1 sibling he actually had 4 and their names were, Gustav, Otto, ida, and Edmund. Adolf was so mad when he found out that all had died except for Paula, his beloved sister. When he found out that she had survived her childhood he got so furious that only the 2 of them survived so he turned against his sister and blamed her for the deaths of his brothers and sisters and in addition to Paula he had 2  step-siblings named Alois and Angela.

When Adolf was young he was called Adi by his family members and through out his childhood he had dreamed of becoming an artist but later on in the 1940's Adolf's dream would come true as an artist of death and feared by millions.

As many know Adolf served in WW1 in the year of 1913. And volunteered to serve in the German army in WW1 he served in the army for 4 years and was awarded 2 iron crosses for his bravery. During the war Hitler suffered from 2 major injuries such as a piece of shrapnel from a grenade in October 1916. The other was when his company got gassed and had gone temporarly blind and that also happened in October of 1918. When Hitler was in recovery the German army had surrendered to the allied powers which had made Hitler outraged to find that Germany had given up.

Shortly after WW1 Adolf had entered politics so that he could represent and speak out of his ideas for Germany.
In 1919 hitler became the 55th member of a small party known as the German worker's party or also referred to as the Nazi party.

Many people today admire Adolf for his power, and his strength that he had over Germany and that how such a small man just spoke his thoughts and ideas out loud for the world to hear and become the world most known and most feared man on planet earth.

Reasons Why Mythology books are worth reading

Action - With the genre of action you won't be bored of your book

Suspense - Most mythology books have lots of suspense, especially in the book series the Hero's of Olympus and it'll make you want to never put your book down.

Fantasy - Many Mythology books are based off of Gods, Hero's, Kingdoms, Knights, etc.

Historical Fiction - They go back in time to the Medieval ages when there were Knights and Kingdoms but instead they add in fictional characters

Overall, if you are looking for a good book for school, independent reading, etc. then I suggest that you pick up a mythology book, and I highly recommend the Heros of Ollympus or the Kane Chronicles. Both series are very well writen with completely different settings, characters, and creatures but written by the same author. I have never picked a book from those series and hated it i have always enjoyed them and have been sucked into them and havn't been able to put them down.

If your still not sure if you want to read this type of genere then you can also check out some of the blogs that I have about the book called the Mark of Athena from the heros of olympus and down below there are some images of the books in the series from 1st book to 3rd book. And also, dont forget to look and read the back or a short summary of some of these book series to see which you think is the best or most interesting for you. Thanks for reading and I hope you pick up a good read for you.
